Practice Tips for Students

Playing your music should be fun. Here are some ideas to help you get the most out of your practice times.

Always be sure to wash your hands before you begin to practice.
That way, you will keep your piano keys free from grease and dirt.
You will also be able to have a better feel for the keys.

Keep your fingernails short and clean.
Long nails make it hard to you to curve your fingers.
Curved fingers are necessary for a good hand position and good piano playing.

Try to have a quiet place to practice.
Turn the TV or CD player down, (better yet, turn it off). You need to hear what you are playing and you need to concentrate.

Set aside a regular time each day for your practice sessions.
If you can't practice for thirty or forty minutes at one time, try breaking it down to two fifteen to twenty minute sessions, perhaps one in the morning before school and one after dinner at night.

Have a clock near the piano.
Remember to record your start and finish times in your lesson assignment book.

Ensure the lighting is adequate.
It's hard to read music in the dark!
If your body casts a shadow on your music, you may need to consider getting a piano lamp.

Follow your weekly lesson assignment.
If there is something you don't understand--after trying it yourself--please feel free to phone me. Leave a message if I am not available and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.
